Rockumentary

In the fall of 2019, batwin + robin was brought on by RWS Entertainment Group as video designers for an all-new production onboard Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship, Apex. 

Rockumentary is a celebration of – and tribute to – the greatest moments in Rock ‘n Roll history and the artists that made them. The show re-creates numerous memorable performances with video design that calls back to the many different eras that defined rock music. 

b+r worked closely with Director / Choreographer Barry Lather to establish the visual language of each scene, basing each performance on notable characteristics of specific music venues, as well as the overall style cues and graphic design of the times. From the punk-grunge world of CBGB in the 1970s for Joan Jett’s performance of “I Love Rock n Roll” to the psychedelic expanse of upstate New York farmland that hosted Woodstock, b+r created original 2D/3D animations, backdrops, and transitions that were blended with archival footage, posters, buttons, and performance photos to fully establish each unique scene. 

The animation in every scene of Rockumentary is closely synced to the onstage choreography, audio tracks, and theatrical show lighting – with the video on the expansive, automated LED wall, which arranges itself in different screen layouts throughout the show, enhanced by diffused LED lighting in a frame around the screen.
